We are so excited to welcome Cathy Kerley as our new Development Director!
Cathy will be leading our development team with planning, organizing, and directing all of Serve Denton’s fundraising plans. She will also oversee all of our donor relations.
Cathy was a part of the original committee to explore the concept of Serve Denton and served on the 2018 board of directors. Previously, she worked for an early childhood program and has consistently been involved in serving the community.
Living in Denton for 37 years, Cathy has spent most of her career working with or in nonprofits. Most recently, Cathy spent 12 years in higher education, working at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University.
Speaking about her new position, Cathy says, "My past experience as a fundraiser in nonprofits and higher education and my passion for serving others makes this position a perfect fit for me."
“I believe collaboration is the key to success and ‘connecting the dots’ to bring people together is rewarding.”
How did you hear about Serve Denton?
I first heard about Serve Denton about 5 years ago when I was invited to sit on a task force to provide child care services to single parent families. I had actually been on a committee in the '80's when the concept was still trying to gain traction in Denton.
I worked for an early childhood program in the past and interfaced with many of the nonprofit agencies in Denton at the time, and it is exciting to see several of them involved in Serve Denton and to discover all the new service agencies now available to our community.
What are you most passionate about?
I have always been passionate about serving my community in whatever way I can share my talents and time. I have lived in Denton almost 37 years and most of my career has been working with or in nonprofits and 12 years in higher education. I believe collaboration is the key to success and "connecting the dots" to bring people together is rewarding.
What are you most excited about with this position?
My past experience as a fundraiser in nonprofits and higher education and my passion for serving others makes this position a perfect fit for me. The staff and volunteers at Serve Denton are so energetic, talented and committed to those who are in need. I will be able to learn so much from them!
How has your past experience prepared you for this position?
As I stated above, all the past years of working in fundraising and my volunteer board experiences allows me to bring my talents to the table for Serve Denton. I developed a proposal research and writing workshop for the state agency I worked for and trained other staff and community members over the years to write proposals to foundations.
I have been blessed to have so many wonderful mentors, supervisors and co-workers who gave me the latitude and tools to develop my knowledge and talent in the fundraising arena.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have lived in Denton nearly 37 years and my how time flies! I have two grown children and one precious granddaughter—who just turned 1 year old—who live close by. I attended Texas State University and attended and presented at many, many conferences, workshops and symposiums over the years.
I have a Cairn Terrier who starred in the Denton Community Theater production of the Wizard of OZ as "Toto" this summer. I also have a cat who does absolutely nothing! I love to travel and have been to China, Russia, Cuba, and several European countries, and heading to Egypt and India in 2019.
I also garden, spend time with family and friends, volunteer and do just about anything outdoors. I love a sharp wit and a sense of humor. It makes life so much easier! I am also a life time learner, so staying connected and involved energizes me.
