Volunteers play a pivotal role in the lives of nonprofits. Without volunteers, organizations wouldn’t have the time or ability to do many needed tasks.
Sometimes a nonprofit gets really lucky and finds a volunteer that’s passionate about your organization and comes back time and time again no matter how many envelopes you ask them to address. Ashlee Mayer is one of those volunteers.
Her Start with Serve Denton
Her work flexibility allowed her free time that she wanted to use to give back to the community. She also wanted to introduce her kids to volunteering.
“I was looking for a place I could bring my kids to volunteer along with me. They are 3 and 6-years-old and there aren't a lot of kid-friendly opportunities. I stopped by Serve Denton to see if they knew of anything. They were in-between receptionists, and I asked if I could help out until they hired someone, and they allowed me to bring my kids. My kids love coming to Serve Denton!”
Volunteering weekly since early 2018 and even donating monthly, Ashlee helps Serve Denton with a variety of tasks, jumping in wherever she is needed!
“I get to do something different every week! Whatever Serve Denton or their partner agencies need help with for the day. I've had the honor of answering phones, organizing closets, setting up for events, and stuffing envelopes. Every week I learn more about the opportunities and needs in Denton.“
Volunteering is not always easy. Since Ashlee has been volunteering with us she has seen many people come into the Serve Denton Center needing help. While working as a volunteer receptionist, Ashlee answered phone calls from moms in need. She could hear babies and kids in the background.
“Those calls are hard, but it's really amazing that so many services are under one roof, so that no matter what the situations is, those in need are able to find assistance with one phone call.”
Ashlee moved to Denton with her family after she completed her undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and met her husband while in graduate school at the University of North Texas.
“We love all the festivals and events, the people, the colleges. I've lived here for 16 years, and we're not planning on leaving anytime soon!”
After graduate school, Ashlee owned a retail store which she sold when she and her husband adopted their oldest son. During maternity leave, she started blogging, which is now her full-time income along with selling essential oils. Her blog, The Crunchy Moose, is about natural wellness and remedies and DIY beauty solutions.
We are so thankful for all Ashlee does for Serve Denton!
