Serve Denton saw a need in the Denton community – the need for housing for families and conveniently located affordable healthcare. After Denton Bible Church leased the Wheeler Printing building to us, support from our board members and plenty of help from the community, The Wheeler House became a reality. It serves as an affordable medical clinic for the community with services provided by Health Services of North Texas and an interim home for those transitioning out of homelessness, managed by Giving Hope, Inc.
Part of the dream of The Wheeler House was outfitting the large property with a proper playground for the children staying there, many of whom have probably never had a yard of their own. We were able to organize a few fundraisers to help support this project, along with a grant from the Denton Benefit League. Once most of the money was raised, the project began!
It took a few weekends of volunteer help from the Denton County Young Professionals, UNT football team, S.W.E.A.T. Team, CrossFit Denton, Trail Life and many others to build the playground, but the finished results came to fruition at Social Media Day Denton on June 30. We used Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to spread the word about the playground and this happy occasion.
We invited kids from around the community to break in the new playground. It was a joy to see the playground bring so much happiness to so many kids that day, which is just a glimpse of the impact it will make on many kids to come.
Thank you for all of your support!
