Celebrating the Small Victories

Celebrating the Small Victories

One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.

Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir.”

What Community Service Taught Me as a College Student

What Community Service Taught Me as a College Student

I cannot speak for all college students, but I believe many of us have some kind of meaningful experience during college that inspires us to change the world.

Sometimes though, we may become disheartened by the circumstances and realities around us that seem to limit our ability to influence all of the people, societies and institutions that make up the world. That is not to say none of us will make an impact for the benefit of many because that can still happen. However, what I think we sometimes miss that we can impact the world in which we live in through the immediate world around us—our community.

CoServ Really Knows How to Serve Denton

CoServ Really Knows How to Serve Denton

Serve Denton was able to honor CoServ at our April board meeting as our Business Partner of the Month! When it comes to their service to our organization, where do we even begin?

To start, CoServ gifted Serve Denton a $20,000 grant to go toward our partnership with the Denton Community Food Center. In less than a year, Serve Denton plans to move into a new building where the Denton Community Food Center will relocate in order to expand their services and serve more people facing hunger.

How Did Celebration Go?

How Did Celebration Go?

It is time for a breather! Serve Denton has been preparing for our annual gala, Celebration, for quite some time.  With the great success of the event behind us, now we can truly celebrate. The success of the event is due the work and dedication of our awesome board, staff, volunteers, and our Super Volunteer – Priscilla Sanders, co-founding board member. It is also largely due to our supporters who came to the event and helped raise funding so more people in Denton County can become self-sufficient.

The Wheeler House Welcomes the Butterflies!

The Wheeler House Welcomes the Butterflies!

Last Saturday, February 18th, seven TWU students from the Kappa Sigma fraternity joined Dr. Jeffrey Robb, TWU professor and butterfly expert, on Saturday, to 11:00 a.m. to prepare the backyard of The Wheeler House for Huffines Subaru to plant a butterfly garden! This equipped the space for the actual planting of native vines and plants that attract butterflies toward the end of March. The students transplanted redbud trees, tilled the ground and spread lava sand. The Wheeler House is a Serve Denton project, home to a transitional housing facility for moms and kids in a housing crisis managed by Giving Hope, Inc. and an affordable health clinic managed by Health Services of North Texas.
